Barbie Girl

Far too frequently have I recently encountered a substantial amount of flashbacks and references to my childhood. Growing up in the 90′s was definitely not a horrible thing, but what I have understood more than anything is that kids these days have it a lot different. For me, Barbie was much more than a plastic princess. There was a time I was jealous of her and everything she had. She is a a fashionista, work-a-holic, and never has a bad hair day. (Except for when I decided to give her a new look with my own sheers–Barbie’s luscious locks were instantly butched) Aside from the Dream House with built-in elevator, Ken boytoy and cherry-red convertible Porsche, I made a point to give my Barbie everything she needed to live a lavishly beautiful life. She had shoes and outfits for days. Oh and purses of course.

Looking back, I can only conclude that I was utterly insane when it came to creating Barbie’s life. All the while, realizing that there was something about “Barbie World” that was safe. There was something about the fantasy life that seemed all so real. Because it was. Barbie’s world was an extension of my childhood imagination. Her world was actually my own. Her story was one I created, her identity was one I made all on my own. Regardless of the advertising about what Barbie could be, her life was dictated by what only I wanted her to be. The controversies about Barbie and female image will continue to be contested in contemporary discourse, but that is one bandwagon I will not jump on. I think there is much more beauty to Barbie than people give her credit.

Thought Catalog has attempted to make sense of the differences of growing up these days while Dina Goldstein has done a fabulous job of putting Barbie in a new light.

[DIY] Shade Board

Problem: I have many pairs of sunglasses that always end taking space on my desk, in my car, purse, etc… I find that they always end up outside their rightful case and collecting dust.

Solution: Find a way to but them on display. I am a huge fan of collage boards and have a few currently hanging up in my room. I recovered a large bulletin board from the storage unit and decided to get creative by turning it into a functional place to hang my shades, too. Follow these super simple steps and show off your sunnys.

What you’ll need:

1 Bulletin board

1 package of tacs

stack of old magazines*

* You can sub out any paper you desire including: newspapers, colored paper, wrapping paper (I just recommend something that you can layer)

Simply piece together pages of the background of your choice until the board is fully covered. Secure using tacs. Hang sunglasses from the tacs and choose a place to mount on wall.

Making a collage using magazines has always been something I find myself doing to feel inspired. I find myself to be much more visually stimulated by mixing and matching pieces from my favorite fashion spreads and editorials. My creating my own collection of bits and pieces, my style influences becomes more a work-of-art.

Gotta have shade!

Tagalong Cookie Cake Bar

I was a Girl Scout for 10 years of my life and even to this day, I would say that my favorite cookie is the Tagalong. I came across this recipe online and was drooling immediately. Thanks to Kevin and Amanda, I now have yet another way to eat my favorite flavor of Girl Scout goodness (aside from frozen). I made these morsels for girls night, where I was in charge of dessert.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 box cake mix (I used double chocolate instead of yellow)
1 stick butter, softened
1 cup of water
1/2 crunchy peanut butter
10-12 Girl Scout Tagalong cookies, chopped
1/2 cup chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. The recipe I followed recommended lining a baking dish with foil in order to reduce the amount of mess. Spray with cooking spray.

2. In a bowl, combine cake mix, butter, egg and water into a bowl and mix until a dough forms. Press at the bottom of the baking dish and top with chocolate chips. Stir sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 peanut butter and pour over the dough and chocolate chips.

3. Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking periodically. My peanut butter + condensed milk mix was a bit thicker than I expected. When finished, let cool completely (this will be hard because, trust me, you will want to eat some) Cut into squares. Serve with soy cream or ice cream and enjoy!

My life has been a bit of a circus lately, so this weekend I am headed off to San Diego for a mini vacay and to visit some of my good friends. What I am looking forward to the most is this Saturday’s 7th annual Tour D’Deigo Cirque de Tour happening in Ocean Beach. Not your typical seaside cruise around the block, this OB adventure is definitely going to be a show! With this year’s theme as Carnival, I am channeling my inner circus chic and coming up with something spectacular to wear for the ride. Let’s just hope the costume can handle the heat!
